Real Reef Rock

Hydrolithon

Hydrolithon boergesenii

Foslie, M. (1909)

Coralline Algae

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Circumtropical

Natural Environment: Inhabits coral rubble and rocks in depths up to 90 feet (27 m).

Aquarium Suitability: Encrusting; purple to lavender; spreading in knobby layers. Prefers turbulent water movement and intense light. Have personally found it a favorite surface area for the initial growth of hair algae bubbles. Magnesium is an important element to monitor, as its natural sea water level must be maintained to continue its growth.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Rhodophyta

    Class: Florideophyceae

    Order: Corallinales

    Family: Corallinaceae

    Genus: Hydrolithon
