Amphiroa

Amphiroa fragilissima

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Branching Coralline Algae

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Tropical West Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Natural Environment: Inhabits rocky substrate or dead corals in lower tidal areas, tidepools and on reef flats up to 65 feet (20 m) deep where it grows in tangled clusters.

Aquarium Suitability: Rarely seen in the hobby, yet when available its delicate form makes for an attractive growth. Does well in moderately lit areas receiving a moderate current, and requires balanced calcium and alkalinity levels that equal that of natural seawater, and well monitored magnesium levels.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Rhodophyta

    Class: Florideophyceae

    Order: Corallinales

    Family: Corallinaceae

    Genus: Amphiroa

FYI: Low magnesium levels can lead to those in this genus becoming brittle and falling apart.
