Dictyota

Dictyota linearis

(C.Agardh) Greville 1830

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Caribbean

Natural Environment: Usually found in shallow rocky areas, either along coastlines, or shallow nutrient-rich reef areas

Aquarium Suitability: As with usually other species in this genus, it inters the trade attached to live rock. Its 4 inch high growth forms dense olive-green bushy mats and may be one of the species in this genus that can do well in aquariums. Moderate light and current would suit it well, and if tending to overgrow nearby species, trimming with a scissor's is feasible to help keep it within the desired areas. Without moderate iodine additions, this species tends to lose coloration, and disintegrate. Fish do not like its taste!

Potential Control Species: Fish: Naso brevirostris, and Naso lituratus

Urchins: Diadema setosum

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Chromista

    Class: Phaeophyceae

    Order: Dictyotales

    Family: Dictyotaceae

    Genus: Dictyota

FYI: Now technically listed as D. implexa, (Desfontaines) J.V.Lamouroux, 1809.
