Range: Eastern Atlantic Ocean: West coast of Africa to southern Angola, including southern Mediterranean.

Size: 48 inches (120 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabits rocky or muddy bottom areas in coastal lagoons and estuaries and is found at depths between 65 – 600 feet (20 – 180 m) where it feeds on small fishes and crustaceans.

General Husbandry: Adults are usually drab brown, with juveniles having white body with vertical black bands. Not purposely collected for the trade.
