Common Name: Purple Spiny Lobster, Painted Crayfish, Blue Spiny Lobster

Species Name: Panulirus versicolor (Latreille, 1804)

Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean

Natural Environment: Rocky coral reef environments

General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 to 79°F (22 - 26°C). This purple and white-banded species can reach 20 inches (50 cm). Small specimens occasionally show up in the trade, however, more a local human food species than an aquarium species. As with most lobsters, they are extremely shy and once in the aquarium prefer to hide in caves during the day. After the lights go out they search for food, including small fishes, and may damage anemones and coral. Will accept any type of fish or shrimp flesh. Undemanding when it comes to water quality. Unless you have a mated pair, it is unsafe to keep more than one in the aquarium.
