Common Name: Sand Tilefish / Sand Blanquillo

Species Name: Malacanthus plumieri (Bloch, 1787)


Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Honduras, Venezuela, and to Southeast Atlantic: Ascension Island


Size: Up to 24 in (60 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit shallow reef areas and builds mounds of rubble near grassbeds


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 81°F (22 - 27°C) and a natural diet of benthic invertebrate and small fishes. Requires a meaty diet, and requires two or three feedings per day. Not seen in the trade that I know of. Shown here for identification only.
