Species Name: Anisotremus virginicus (Linnaeus, 1758)


Range: Atlantic Ocean: Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, south to Brazil


Size: Up to 15 in (37 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit rocky coastal reefs where they form small groups taking shelter in caves and shipwrecks and venturing out during evening hours to feed


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 80°F (22 - 27°C) and has a natural diet of benthic invertebrate, i.e., crabs, shrimp, serpent stars, polychaete worms, isopods, bivalves, tunicates, hermit crabs, etc., and small fishes. Need a meaty diet, i.e., chopped fresh fish or shrimp flesh, scallops, and squid, and requires two or three feedings per day. Generally feeds at night. Provide hiding places and ledges to take refuge under. Should be kept only with non-aggressive tankmates. Usually seen as juveniles, however, they grow fast and outgrow most hobbyist aquariums
