Common Name: Regal / Blue Tang / Surgeonfish
Species Name: Paracanthurus hepatus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean: East Africa to southern Japan and the Line Islands, Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, Somoa
Size: Up to 10 in (25 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabit clear, current-rich outer reef terraces
General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 83°F (22 - 28°C) and its natural diet consists mainly of zooplankton. Requires a varied diet, with two or three feedings per day. Juveniles can be kept in groups, yet adults do better by themselves. They are more sociable than most other tangs and also very susceptible to white spot infestations (Cryptocaryon), possibly because they produce little body slime. Adults tend to lose the blue coloration in the belly area.
