Common Name: Hawaiian Squirrelfish

Species Name: Sargocentron xantherythrum (Jordan & Evermann, 1903)


Range: Eastern Pacific Ocean: Johnston and Hawaiian Islands


Size: Up to 7 in (17.5 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit caves and ledge areas on the basalt reefs and occurs at depths between 3 - 300 feet (1 - 100 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 80°F (22 - 27°C) and has a natural diet of large zooplankton, crabs and shrimp, and feeds mainly during evening hours. Requires a meaty diet such as enriched chopped fish or shrimp flesh, mysis, frozen brine shrimp, and/or frozen carnivore foods with one or two feedings per day. Should have numerous hiding places in the aquarium. Best maintained in small groups. Not really safe with anything that could be swallowed. Has a spine that is venomous.
