Species Name: Hippocampus abdominalis Lesson, 1827


Range: Southwest Pacific Ocean: Australia, New Zealand, and possibly in Thailand and Philippines


Size: Up to 12 in (30 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabits tidepools, bays, and lagoons where seagrass is well established


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 80°F (22 - 27°C) and its natural diet consists of zooplankton and small benthic crustaceans. Requires a meaty diet consisting of enriched live brine shrimp and/or enriched frozen mysis shrimp, with several feeding per day. Rarely seen in the trade. Dried and sold in the Oriental medicine trade.
