Species Name: Taeniura lymma (Forsskål, 1775)


Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: Red Sea, southeastern Africa, Solomon Islands, southern Japan, Philippines, Australia, Melanesia, and Polynesia


Size: Up to 12 in (30 cm) wide and 27 in (69 cm) long


Natural Environment: Inhabit lagoons and sandy tidal flats


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C) and has a natural diet of worms, shrimps, hermit crabs and small fishes. Requires a meaty diet, preferably live grass shrimp, worms and/or crabs. May fast for weeks before eating. Needs fine sand to bury itself in. Should receive at least several feedings per week. Often seen in the trade, yet very difficult to maintain. Sensitive to very low levels of copper, use only RO/DI water for the aquarium. Better left in the wild.
