Common Name: Southern Stingray

Species Name: Dasyatis americana Hildebrand & Schroeder, 1928


Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: New jersey to the northern Gulf of Mexico and to Brazil, including the Antilles


Size: Up to 80 in (200 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit sand flats, seagrass beds, lagoons and reef slopes. Buries in sand during day and hunts at night.


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 65 - 76°F (18 - 24°C) and has a natural diet of worms, shrimps, crabs and small fishes. Requires a meaty diet, preferably live grass/glass shrimp, worms and/or crabs. May fast for weeks before eating. Needs fine sand to bury itself in. Should receive at least several feedings per week. Requires a large aquarium with much open space.
