Species Name: Hippichthys cyanospilus (Bleeker, 1854)


Range: West Pacific Ocean: Vietnam to Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia


Size: Up to 4 inches (10 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit shallow protected reef flats


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 to 82°F (22 - 28°C) and feeds upon benthic invertebrate and zooplankton. Prefers a live meaty diet, such as enriched live brine shrimp, with numerous daily feedings, however, may be weaned onto meaty frozen foods such as mysis. Requires a reef-like environment with carefully selected tankmates and numerous places to hide. Rarely seen in the trade and probably better left in the wild.
