Common Name: Japanese Pinecone Fish

Species Name: Monocentrus japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782)


Range: Widespread in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, from Japan to east Africa


Size: Up to 6 inches (15 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit rocky reefs from a depth of 65 - 650 feet (20 - 210 m) where they hide by day in caves and roam sandy areas at night in search of benthic crustaceans


General Husbandry: Prefer a temperature range of 64 - 76°F (18 - 24°C). Requires a live meaty diet, preferably small shrimp such as grass, brine shrimp or mysis. Fairly hardy in the aquarium once settled in. Has been weaned from live foods to nonliving foods, yet is usually a difficult process. During the day, they need caves to hide in. They venture out during the evening hours in search of food, usually small fish and shrimp. Feedings should occur during evening hours. Similar in appearance to C. gloriamaris except it is slightly more rounded in shape. Non-aggressive towards other fishes.
