Common Name: Green Humphead Parrotfish

Species Name: Bolbometopon muricatum (Valenciennes, 1840)


Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean: Red Sea and East Africa to Line Islands and Samoa, north to Yaeyama and Wake Islands, south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia, Palau, Caroline, and Mariana Islands


Size: Up to 52 inches (130 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit clear lagoons and outer reef areas


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 75 - 82°F (24 - 28°C) and feeds upon algae covered rock and coral branches/mounds. Even though still quite attractive, they are far too large for most hobbyist aquariums. Requires numerous feedings per day with a varied diet containing some meaty foodstuffs and a lot of vegetable matter. Safe to keep with soft corals but not stony corals. It also sometimes uses its head to dislodge coral pieces to chew on. Rarely seen in the trade.
