Common Name: Shortnose Batfish
Species Name: Ogcocephalus nasutus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1837)
Range: Western Atlantic Ocean; Caribbean to northern Brazil
Size: Up to 15 in (38 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabits sandy, muddy, rubble, and seagrass bed areas in lagoons and fore-reefs from a depth of 3 – 900 feet (1 – 275 m) and its diet consists of crabs, worms, bivalves and small fish.
General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 80°F (22 – 27°C). This fish rarely ever finds its way into the trade unless dredged up by fishing trawlers. It’s a bottom dweller and feeder, often covering its self in substrate. Requires a wide-open sandy bottom environment, and a varied diet of fresh and frozen meaty foods. They should be maintained in large systems with plenty of swimming room with no aggressive tankmates. Better left in the wild!
