Common Name: Spotted Coral Croucher

Species Name: Caracanthus maculatus (Gray, 1831)


Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean: East Indies to Line, Marquesan, and Austral Islands, north to southern Japan and throughout Micronesia


Size: Up to 2 in (5 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabits the branches of Acropora, Pocillopora, and Stylophora in shallow surge zones and feeds upon snapping shrimps


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 74 - 83°F (23 - 28°C). Requires a meaty diet, i.e., enriched brine shrimp, mysis, finely chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and other various frozen carnivore foods, with one or two feedings per day. Rarely seen in the trade and can make a nice addition to nano reef tanks, however, likes to hide.
