Species Name: Synodus intermedius (Spix & Agassiz, 1829)


Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: North Carolina, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil


Size: Up to 17 inches (42 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit reef flats and protected seaward slopes, and found in sandy and rubble areas


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 79°F (22 - 26°C) and has a natural diet of small fishes. These are ambush hunters that conceal themselves by burying themselves or simply remain still until something eatable comes close. Should have a sandy substrate to bury itself. Probably will only take live foods, such as grass shrimp and small fishes and usually feeds at night. Requires a meaty diet with at least one feeding per day. Rarely seen in the trade.
