Common Name: Fu Manchu / Twinspot Lionfish

Species Name: Dendrochirus biocellatus (Fowler, 1934)

Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean: Mauritius, Reunion, Maldives, and Sri Lanka to the Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Scott Reef; throughout Micronesia

Size: Up to 4 inches (10 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabit shallow coastal reef areas and caves, usually seen feeding at night

General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C) and natural diet consists mainly of small fishes. Requires a meaty diet, i.e., enriched live brine shrimp, mysis, chunky chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and/or carnivore frozen foods, with two or three feedings per week. The Fu Manchu name comes from the large skin flaps, or whiskers hanging down from either side of its mouth and looking very much like a Fu Manchu mustache. The Twinspot name comes from two dark eyespots ringed with yellow and red that occur on the dorsal fin just above the caudal peduncle. Should not be fed freshwater feeder fishes too often, as that can cause kidney and liver damage. Use live grass shrimp and/or saltwater Mollies, and try to wean off live foods. Prefer dimly lit environments and don't forget it has venomous spines!
