Species Name: Hypoplectrus indigo (Poey, 1852)


Range: Western Central Atlantic Ocean: Florida, Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, and Cayman Islands


Size: Up to 5.5 inches (14 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit reef slopes and drop-offs from 40 to 140 feet (12 - 45 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 70 - 80°F (21 - 27°C) and natural diet consists mainly of benthic invertebrate and/or smaller fishes. Requires a meaty diet, i.e., enriched chopped fish and/or shrimp flesh, with at least one feeding per day. It will, however, attempt to eat small ornamental shrimp, therefore it may not be desirable in some reef aquariums. Rarely seen in the trade, however, a good mantis shrimp eater. Requires numerous hiding places. May be bothered by more aggressive fishes.
