Common Name: Humpback / Panther / Polka-Dot Grouper / Barramundi Cod
Species Name: Chromileptis altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828)
Range: Widespread in the Indo-Pacific Ocean
Size: Up to 28 inches (70 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabit coastal reefs and lagoons and deep silty slopes from depths of 3 to over 150 feet (1 - 50 m)
General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C) and natural diet consists mainly of benthic invertebrate. Requires a meaty diet, i.e., chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and two feedings per week. Is basically none-aggressive except to smaller fishes and shrimp, which it will eat. As a juvenile, its white body with large black polka-dots is quite attractive. Yet, those dots become much smaller with age, and since it grows quite fast, it requires an aquarium over 100 gallons. It also has a downward head swimming fashion that attracts many hobbyists. Should have several hiding places and a lot of swimming room. It's also a big eater, therefore produces a large quantity of waste. Good protein skimming is highly recommended. As time goes passes, it will appear to recognize its owner and swim back and forth in the front portion of the aquarium anticipating its next meal.
