Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: South Carolina to southern Brazil

Size: Up to 16 inches (40 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabit seagrass beds and coral reefs

General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 79°F (22 - 26°C) and their natural diet consists mainly of small fishes and some small crustaceans. Requires a meaty diet, i.e., chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and two feedings per week. Needs a large tank with hiding places and enhanced filtration as these fish are ambush predators and produce a large amount of waste products. A secretive species and rarely seen in the trade.
