Common Name: Yellowtail Damselfish

Species Name: Microspathodon chrysurus (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1830)


Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Bermuda, southern Florida, and the Caribbean


Size: Up to 8 inches (20 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit coral reefs, with juveniles often associated with Millepora, at depths up to 30 feet (10 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 79ºF (22 - 26ºC) and feeds mostly on algae, yet also the polyps of fire coral. Requires a meaty diet with some algae with two or three feedings per day. Juveniles have blue dots on a black body. Adults become brown, lose most of its blue spots, and have a yellow tail. Becomes very aggressive with age, and limit is one per tank. Should only be kept with larger and more aggressive fishes.
