Common Name: Blue Devil / Sapphire Devil Damselfish

Species Name: Chrysiptera cyanea (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824)


Range: Indo-West Pacific Ocean: eastern edge of the Indian Ocean, including Indonesia, Philippines, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and the northern Great Barrier Reef


Size: Up to 3 inches (7 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit lagoons and inshore coral reefs at depths between 3 to 30 feet (1 - 10 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C). An upper water column fish and natural diet consists mainly of zooplankton. Requires a meaty diet with some algae with two or three feedings per day. Does extremely well in the aquarium. Mature males have an orange tail except from some Indonesia areas where the tail is more yellow as is the ventral fins. Specimens from Great Barrier Reef sometimes have yellow on the throat as well. The female has a black spot at the base of the hindmost dorsal rays. Can become aggressive with age.
