Species Name: Chaetodon milliaris Quoy & Gaimard, 1825


Range: Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll


Size: up to 5 inches (12 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit lagoon reefs, reef faces, reef slopes, and drop-offs at depths between 3 - 800 feet (1 - 240 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 81°F (22 - 27°C) and natural diet consists of plankton, worms, clams, and crustaceans. Acclimates quickly, and accepts a wide range of enriched meaty foodstuffs, and seems to prefer brine shrimp and chopped mussel. Requires numerous feedings per day. Can be kept with members of its own species (add all at one time) and/or other family members. If there's such a thing as the top best ten butterflies to keep, this is one of them.
