Common Name: Raccoon / Moon / Red Striped Butterflyfish

Species Name: Chaetodon lunula Lacépède, 1802

Range: Widespread throughout the Indo-Pacific, including Hawaii

Size: up to 8 inches (20 cm)

Natural Environment: Inhabit shallow and somewhat deep reef areas at depths between 3 - 270 feet (1 - 80 m)

General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C) and natural diet consists of live corals, worms, algae, clams, and crustaceans. Requires a variety of frozen foods (meaty and algae) which can be supplemented with flake foods with numerous feedings per day. Has spawned with C. auriga, producing a hybrid. Fairly easy to acclimate in the aquarium and rather hardy. Provide very open caves and crevices for it to hide in when feeling threatened or wanting rest. A real favorite among hobbyists. Can be kept with members of its own species (add all at one time) and/or other family members. If there's such a thing as the top best ten butterflies to keep, this is one of them.
