Species Name: Chaetodon auriga Forsskål, 1775


Range: Indo-Pacific Ocean: Red Sea, New South Wales, Queensland and western Australia


Size: up to 8 inches (20 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit heavy coral growth areas and collected between depths of 3 to 30 feet (1 - 10 m)


General Husbandry: Has a temperature range of 72 - 82°F (22 - 28°C) and natural diet consists mainly of coral polyps, crustaceans, algae, and worms, yet accepts a wide variety of meaty-type foods in the aquarium. Requires numerous feedings per day. If one of the first fishes to enter the aquarium, will establish its territory and aggressively defend it. If kept with other butterflies, introduce last. Needs hiding places/caves to retire in at night. One of the hardiest butterflies and they are moderately disease resistant. If there's such a thing as the top best ten butterflies to keep, this is one of them.
