Range: Western Atlantic Ocean: Canada to the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico
Size: up to 18 inches (45 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabit shallow water areas over grass flats.
General Husbandry: Prefer a temperature range of 72 - 79°F (22 - 26°C). Feeds upon benthic creatures, e.g., crustaceans, mollusks, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, crabs, and some marine plants/algae. Requires a varied diet, which contains both meaty and vegetable matter. A slow moving fish, therefore, it should not be housed with fast moving and/or fin-nipping fishes. When excited can release a toxin that may kill other fish.
