Common Name: Magenta Dottyback

Species Name: Pictichromis porphyreus Lubbock & Goldman, 1974


Range: West Pacific Ocean: Philippines to Samoa, Ryukyu Islands, Moluccas and Admiralty Islands, and Palau and the Caroline Islands in Micronesia


Size: up to 2 inches (5 cm)


Natural Environment: Inhabit small caves and crevices at depths between 20 to 200 feet (5 - 60 m)


General Husbandry: Prefer a temperature range of 75 - 79° F (24 - 26°C) and natural diet consist mainly of zooplankton and benthic crustaceans. May eat small shrimp. Feed meaty/freeze-dried foodstuffs. A pretty fish, but can be very aggressive, even to larger fishes. One to aquarium, even in large aquariums! Probably not a good addition to aquariums containing gobies, wrasses, and other somewhat small and peaceful fishes.
