Common Name: Argus Marine Beta
Species Name: Calloplesiops argus Fowler & Bean, 1930
Range: Western Central Pacific Ocean: Philippines and Indonesia
Size: up to 7 inches (17 cm)
Natural Environment: Inhabit various types of hiding places and caves in reef slopes at depths of 20 to 100 feet (6 - 30 m)
General Husbandry: Prefer a temperature of 75 - 79°F (24 - 26°C). Very similar to C. altivelis except for its coloration, e.g., its light dots are much smaller and more numerous. They spend their daylight hours in caves with only their tail possibly protruding outward. Their tail contains a false eyespot and gives the fish a moray eel appearance, which discourages predators. Also very shy, and needs sufficient hiding places/caves. Do not add to a tank that has aggressive feeders, as this fish may starve to death. Requires a meaty diet, e.g., enriched brine shrimp, mysis, fish flesh, and other meaty type foods. Do not keep with fishes or crustaceans small enough to be eaten. Rarely seen in the trade.
