Rhipocephalus

Rhipocephalus phoenix

(J. Ellis & Solander) Kutzing, 1834

Pinecone Algae

Likely Reef Tank Suitable

Likely Fish-Only Tank Suitable

Range: Tropical West Atlantic Ocean

Natural Environment: Inhabits sandy areas on reef flats and seagrass beds.

Aquarium Suitability: This pretty calcareous alga resembles a pinecone and its root-like structure is a large bulb with rhizoids that secure it to the substrate. Its short, about 6 inch (15 cm) high growths form clusters and require bright light, gentle currents, and slightly above natural calcium and alkalinity levels to keep it looking its best.

Taxonomy:

    Kingdom: Plantae

    Phylum: Chlorophyta

    Class: Ulvophyceae

    Order: Bryopsidales

    Family: Udoteaceae

    Genus: Rhipocephalus

FYI: Not a tasty alga, as fish and various invertebrates do not like its taste - except for urchins.
