Range: Native to the Western Atlantic, Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, however, infestations of this alga have shown up in the Mediterranean, Australia, and California.

Natural Environment: Inhabits various areas up to 100 feet (30 m) deep, e.g., reef flats, tidepools, sandy near-shore areas, hardpan areas, coral rubble and rocky areas, and lagoon bottoms.

Aquarium Suitability: Accidentally introduced into the Mediterranean Sea, where it has overwhelmed large areas with its growth. It protects itself by producing substances that are toxic to many herbivores, including urchins! Considered an invasive species and no aquarist should purchase and/or keep this species.
