These type clams are mentioned here because they are often available in the trade. They have the ability to swim by opening and closing their shells, thereby expelling water from its internal cavity like a jet engine expels air. They also have a row of tiny eyespots around the edge of the mantle similar to the Tridacna clams, which helps warn them if it becomes necessary to change location, escape predators or simply close. Flame scallops are pretty, yet do not usually last much longer than six months in captivity. They also like to flit here-and-there, sometimes knocking over other animals.
