These seagrasses inhabit sublittoral areas as deep as 100 feet (30 m), but can invade intertidal areas. It has narrow leaves up to 6 inches (15 cm) long and 3.5 mm wide. They emerge from thin rhizomes (underground stems), which have fine roots and are commonly found on the edges of the sand bars. They grow rapidly, forming mats that trap and stabilize sediments, often allowing other seagrasses to establish themselves and providing a more stable environment.
